Jacky Jaan-Yuan Kuo (b. 1994, Taiwan) is an artist based between Oslo and Taipei, working with site-responsive installations, sculptures, sound, and collaborative storytelling. His practice traces familial narratives, collected memories, and urban encounters as echoes of adaptation and displacement.

Kuo holds a BFA in Applied Arts from Fu Jen Catholic University and an MFA in Fine Art from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. His work has been exhibited at Tenthaus (NO), Oslo Kunstforening (NO), 413 BETA (KR), SS Space Space (TW), Norsk Billedhoggerforening (NO), and BO, The Association of Visual Artists Oslo (NO). He has also participated in residencies at Podium (NO), Kunstnernes Hus (NO), and Pier-2 Art Center (TW). Since 2024, Kuo has co-led Seepage Edition, a collective dedicated to investigating unconventional relationships in everyday life through experimental practices, spatial installations, and sculptural furniture.

(The exhibition essay is written by BO’s director Una Mathiesen Gjerde)

A cockroach normally lives no longer than 200 days. Within this lifespan they move through the phases of egg, nymph, and adult. They are social creatures, living in large groups that display both collective decision making and societal collaboration, some even exhibit a form of parental care. When left alone, they withdraw, they seek shelter, move, and eat less. Are they lonely?

Jacky Jaan-Yuan Kuo’s exhibition at BO traces human environments, reimagined from the cockroach’s point of view. Following this thread, Cockroach Chronicles opens up for questions on urbanism, class, family structures, and religious practices – illustrating how these systems intertwine and resonate within individual experiences.

With its high humidity and subtropical climate, Taipei holds the perfect conditions for cockroaches. In fact, the island of Taiwan houses 75 different species, five of which are associated with human habitats. American and Australian roaches thrive in urban areas, while German and Asian roaches dominate homes. The names of the various cockroaches would have you believe that Taipei is not only an international city for humans, but also for roaches.

As with most pests, the density of cockroaches first and foremost indicates a density of humans, and Taipei is the 40th most populous urban area in the world. Non-surprisingly, this makes the city expensive. Mirroring the class distinctions of the metropole, an image of Taipei’s skyline will show glossy skyscrapers juxtaposed with illegal metal rooftop additions as a chaotic mix. By the authorities these metal sheet structures are seen as a health hazard, as well as a hindrance for urban development. However, removing them has proved to be difficult as the residents in these dwellings consider them as private property. They are extensions of their living spaces, and the lingering traces of both their familial and national history.

At BO, Kuo’s exhibition in many ways both starts and ends in the basement. Placed below the exhibition venue, this space imitates the perspective of the cockroach as a creature that moves close to, but often on the side of, our environments. Through the eyes of this outsider perspective, the audience is asked to observe, but also question the various physical and representational structures laid before us as we move through space upstairs.

Upon entering the major exhibition space, one physically steps into a deconstructed and limited realm, reminiscent of a rooftop terrace. The surrounding blue sky wallpaper suggests that we are not at floor level, but rather have ascended to the top of the city, where we are granted an overview of our surroundings. Various, smaller objects give away that this is a private space. Lives are being played out between these walls.

Moving to the next two rooms, the audience is faced with a wall-hung sculpture resembling a canopy awning, creating the sensation of transcending from a semi-indoor space to the outdoors. The sculpture extends between the two rooms, suggesting an alternative spatial perspective. Shifting the gaze upward while making our way to the next room, we can observe the vague shape of various fruits and religious objects. These recognizable forms leave the impression of seeing something that we cannot really see – like a ghost, or a systematic structure. It is real and not real all at once, making it a question of beliefs, and ultimately also choice. Do we trust what we think we see?

This spiritual element is further enhanced in the inner space. We here find ourselves faced with a series of bed frame-like shelves, inspired by household altars, where the sacred meets the down-towned nature of an everyday home. Tracing our path through the exhibition, from the outside terrace to the innermost altar, Kuo’s play with the blurred lines between the notions of public and private becomes disclosing – not only are the structures of home, family, religion, politics, and capital interlinked, they are deeply co-dependent.

These multiple layers of community are further connected through a series of wheeled vessels positioned around the exhibition. These vessels symbolize joss paper burners—traditionally used to burn spirit money as to bridge the living with the afterlife. The act of burning pushes them out of the domestic space, further blurring the boundary between home and the public sphere.

Cockroach Chronicles is an invitation to reflect on how public spaces reveal what happens in the privacy of our homes, and vice versa; how our familial and spiritual units are shaped by societal interest. What at first sight might strike as a contradictory chaos, is mixed together and then restructured to draw up an image that encourages the audience to reflect upon how we live, and what we believe in.

Both on the other side, and in the middle of this is the cockroach; the unwelcome guest, that simultaneously acts as the reminder of the inescapability of it all. No matter how many forms of control and layers of protection we apply to ourselves and our surroundings, the cockroach will always find its way into our homes.

Display is a fundamental aspect of exhibitions. The manner in which works are presented not only influences how audiences engage with them but also plays a crucial role in defining the relationship between the artwork and its situated environment.

For artists who primarily work with sculpture, the presence of pedestals and walls is inherently dialectical. These elements serve both as tools for display and as integral components or extensions of the work. They facilitate the interaction between the work and the exhibition space, while simultaneously reinforcing the sculpture’s autonomy. Furthermore, the presence of pedestals and walls alongside the work signifies the transition of the piece from a private setting to a public exhibition space.

This exhibition, proposed by 'Seepage Edition,' a creative collective dedicated to exploring unconventional relationships in everyday life, features three artists specialising in installations. The project examines methods of exhibition, display tools, and the function of sculpture. By referencing functional furniture such as chairs, cabinets, tabletops, and screens, the exhibition explores display objects—pedestals and walls—seeking to identify intersections between everyday life and the historical discourse of sculpture.

In the exhibition, visitors will observe how the artists use pedestals and walls as a foundation to create various sculptures with similar forms or materials. These works are designed to evoke different contexts, atmospheres, functions, and experiences. As suggested by the exhibition’s title, ‘Display Rehearsal,’ the exhibition reflects the artists' intention to present the practice of display through the repetitive transformation of forms. This approach offers multiple perspectives on sculpture, blurring the distinctions between sculpture and tool, and between display and functionality.

In addition, the installations in the exhibition seek to transcend the boundaries between public and private spaces, extending beyond both physical and psychological dimensions. The works can be viewed as domestic furniture transformed through exhibition, entering the public domain, while also reflecting public display pieces that re-enter private and everyday experiences, creating a dynamic process.

In this context, Seepage Edition regards the process of viewing and interacting with the work as a form of ‘seepage.’ This term signifies the dissolution of clear boundaries between sculpture, furniture, and public and private spaces, which merge and permeate through gradual and subtle interactions. This process extends into daily life, offering new experiences of space, objects, and installations, and inviting multifaceted hybrid forms of existence.

Government Seepage Edition is a creative collective dedicated to exploring unconventional relationships in everyday life. Through experimental events, contextual experiences, spatial installations, and sculptural furniture, they consistently challenge established definitions and boundaries.

Seepage Edition is adept at discovering new ways of understanding through creative practice, actively seeking methods of intervention. Their practices, seen as a form of ‘seepage,’ aims to transcend the boundaries between art and living spaces in a gradual yet meaningful way.Through this dynamic interplay of infiltration, they bring forth new hybrid forms of existence.

Seepage Edition is composed of three artists specialising in installation, sculpture, and photography: Jacky Jaan-Yuan Kuo, Sara Wu, and Sean Tseng. They are currently based in Norway and Taiwan.

My works encompass sculptures and image-based objects, evolving from the narrative themes of the parallel exhibition showcased at Tenthaus (Oslo, Norway). In this new series, I draw inspiration from the deity and ancestor altars prevalent in my family home, using them as metaphors for transgenerational representations. These works explore the coexistence and shared dining moments of various living individuals (visible) and parallel beings (not always visible) gathered within the family. Through this exploration, I highlight the contradictory and seemingly inseparable moments of family reunions, offering a nuanced insight into these intimate yet complex interactions. The exhibition space of 413 BETA is located on the second floor. As spectators pass through the stairwell, they encounter four small sculptures resembling table leg covers. These sculptures lack table legs and tabletops (in contrast with the site-specific table installation at Tenthaus), resembling loosened talismans, or scattered old socks. The patterns on the fabric leg covers also echo the tablecloth patterns of the table installation at Tenthaus, appearing as messages left behind after a gathering.
Entering the exhibition space on the right, there are two tabletop sculptures embedded in the walls, shaped like partially folded round tables, surfaces awaiting reunions. Grid-patterned fabric covers one of them, and its tabletop holds 3 boxes of eye drops and incense sticks wrapped in transparent plastic bags. In contrast, the other is covered with lace fabric and transparent plastic sheets, adorned with scattered earplugs and artificial flowers. These are parts of the round table, resembling corners of altars in a family, invisible or awaiting future communal dining moments.

(Exhibition text by Tenthaus)

In the past three years, Tenthaus have marked the Pride Month of June through works of Nayara Leite, Maya Økland and Ventura Profana. This year, we present ‘Daddy’s Dinner’, by Jinbin Chen, Jacky Jaan-Yuan Kuo, and Bobby Yu Shuk Pui. Through their collaborative perspectives, we bring the discourse of migration, displacement, queerness and belonging onto the family dinner table.

The project consists of two exhibitions produced by Tenthaus – one at Tenthaus (Oslo) and another mirrored at 413BETA (Seoul) as part of [The OVEN: URGENCY] project. The exhibitions present a collection of new artworks, incorporating films, sculptures, paintings, installations, and objects arranged within family-oriented spatial settings.

The three artists migrated to Norway from Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan. They explore how gendered and hierarchical family roles in East Asian patriarchal cultures impact identity and family values. Despite geopolitical differences, their shared experiences of patriarchal dynamics, which they call ‘dinner-table politics,’ reveal complex family power struggles.

‘Dinner-table politics’ metaphorically represents the power dynamics and relationships in intimate settings, where food-sharing depicts love and care. Conversations and tensions at the dinner table often prioritize man-speaking, exposing underlying anxieties and power imbalances shaped by societal norms, cultural traditions, and individual personalities

Bobby Yu Shuk Pui’s new short film shares their three family stories and experience through recipes; Jinbin Chen’s paintings and painterly objects reflect the gap between the public facade of family life and its true essence; and Jacky Jaan-Yuan Kuo’s large-scale installation transforms the gallery into a ‘domestic drama,’ exploring how domestic spaces, rituals, and dining practices establish familial power dynamics and observation.

‘Daddy’s Dinner’ is a poetic exploration of the ties that bind us.

The exhibition features an artist talk on 1 June at 14:00 at Tenthaus, moderated by Norwegian Craft project and communication manager Marthe Yung Mee Hansen.

The exhibition is curated and produced by Tenthaus, supported by Oslo Kommune, Norske Billedkunstnere, Kulturdirektoratet, and the National Culture and Arts Foundation (Taiwan).

(Photo documentation by Kunstdok/Tor Simen Ulstein; Exhibition text by Pedro Gómez-Egaña can be found here)My works encompass a large-scale spatial installation and a functional sculpture designed to transform the gallery into an intermediary space reminiscent of a ‘domestic drama’. This transformation aims to probe how domestic spaces, familial rituals, and dining practices inherently establish power dynamics and modes of observation among family members. Utilizing disposable takeout chopsticks and food containers, commonly found in my own family gatherings, as a central narrative element, I emphasize their role as external, foreign objects within the familial context. Through this lens, I magnify and reveal the transient, contradictory, and seemingly inseparable moments of family reunions, offering a nuanced exploration of these intimate yet complex interactions.

‘While plums are offered as a sign of respect, they are considered disrespectful to spirits because the seeds of these fruits can be excreted from the human body after consumption.’

‘A Dent In The Room’ is one of a series of sculptures exhibited at Tenthaus. This piece draws its inspiration from the cylindrical, hollow paper money burners commonly found in front of Taiwanese homes or along pedestrian arcades. Rooted in the folklore religion shaped by the beliefs of Han Chinese immigrants, these burners serve as open containers for burning offerings and spirit money. Their purpose extends beyond worshipping deities and ancestors; they also serve a practical role in preventing the dispersion of ashes during the burning process. Typically, 'gold paper money' is adorned with gold leaf and burnt as offerings to deities or for seeking blessings, while 'silver paper money' is embellished with silver leaf and burnt for ancestors or spirits. It's believed that unseen beings derive energy from the heat generated by different metals. Another belief suggests that fresh flowers and fruits are used as a welcoming gesture, but these beings actually feed on the smoke.

I delve into the malleability of form and the rigidity of ordinance within ritualistic objects, employing them as a blended metaphor. This journey takes me into the realm of private and personal exchanges, as well as the domain where individuality converges with collectivism. Additionally, it scrutinizes the human and artificial viewpoints that underpin animism, prompting contemplation on whether anything alluded to by human consciousness can be considered a manifestation of personification.
